This finely made mourning ring is constructed in gold with delicate cannetille ornament and set with half pearls and pink topaz. The bezel contains a glazed compartment preserving the woven hair of the deceased, a deeply personal memorial element characteristic of nineteenth-century mourning jewellery. The reverse of the bezel is engraved: “W(illia)m Nicholson, Died 21 Dec 1823, aged 61.” The ring survives in fine original condition.
The inscription probably refers to William Nicholson, a retired cutler of Norfolk Street, Sheffield, recorded as having died on 21 December 1823 aged 62.
