Roman silver signet ring with an ellipsoid bezel engraved in intaglio for use as a seal, depicting a stylised bucranium. A small star appears between the eyes, while between the horns is a plume or feathered ornament. The hoop is plain and slightly tapering. The silver is heavily tarnished.
The bull-head motif appears in Roman religious imagery and may have carried associations of strength, sacrifice, or masculine power. A connection with Mithraic symbolism is possible, though not certain.
Provenance: Ex German art market, 2000s. Acquired from an EU collector living in London. From the collection of a Surrey, UK, gentleman.
