Large Asymmetrical Bronze Buckle.
France or England, 15th–16th century.

A large late medieval asymmetrical buckle cast in bronze and decorated with foliate engraving. The central bar is fitted with a double-looped chape and a flat-sectioned iron pin, now incomplete. The surface bears a rich brown patina with green oxidised highlights in recessed areas, suggesting burial or long-term exposure.
The asymmetrical form and substantial size suggest use for securing heavy textile or leather—perhaps on a harness, belt, or civic or military garment. Decorative yet utilitarian, such buckles were widely produced in England and northern France from the later Middle Ages into the early Renaissance. The absence of symmetry and the stylised leafy engraving indicate a functional object still made with a regard for visual refinement.
