An important ancient gold ring belonging to an early Christian.

Early Byzantine, 6th century AD.

Ring Size Q UK / 8.25 US.

The intaglio measures 1 x 0.7cm.

 

The gold ring weighs 6.7 grams.

Each side of the ring is carved with crucifixes supporting foliate spandrels flanking the intaglio. The banded agate intaglio is carved with the profile of a bearded man beneath a crucifix.

 

A pendant set with a similar intaglio can be found in the Cleveland Museum of Art, Accession number: 1947.33.
