An Etruscan gold mounted carnelian scarab of a charioteer.
Italian, 6th Century BC.
The scarab measures 1.3 x 1 x 8cm.
It is exceptionally rare to find an ancient scarab encased in its original gold decoration as they were often left unmounted or the gold removed due to its intrinsic value.
The scarab is mounted on a later high carat gold ring.
The ring is a size O UK / 7.25 US.
A similar scarab, also retaining its original gold casing can be found in the collection of the British Museum, Museum number: 1872,0604.33.
