A Pair of Gold and Gem-Set Earrings

Byzantine Empire, 5th–6th Century AD

Dimensions: Each earring approx. 9.8 cm long

Weight: Approx. 7.3 grams each

A refined pair of Byzantine gold earrings, each constructed from twisted gold wire and hoop fittings, supporting a series of faceted amethyst beads. Suspended from the beads are cruciform pendants, the arms set with pearls and sapphires, and centred with a cabochon emerald within a rub-over gold mount.

This composition exemplifies the confluence of opulence and Christian symbolism characteristic of high-status personal adornment in the early Byzantine period. The use of precious stones in a structured theological arrangement suggests a liturgical or devotional function, in addition to their aesthetic value.
