A Renaissance gold and enamel pendant set with a carnelian jugate portrait intaglio.
Italian, 16th century.
Measures 6.5 x 2.9cm, the intaglio measures 2.8 x 2.2cm.
Weighs 9.4 grams.
An oval carnelian engraved with a double portrait intaglio of the profiles of a Roman husband and wife facing dexter; a bearded man with curly hair and a woman with her hair braided around her forehead, each with visible tunica around their shoulders. The intaglio is set in an ornate gold mount finely chased with repeating egg-and-dart decoration and adorned with black and white enamels. The pendant is suspended by a gold split ring at the top and a baroque pearl with silver mount is suspended from the bottom.
The enamels show minor losses, the pearl and split ring are old replacements.
