An agate cameo of the Roman Goddess Flora.

Italian, mid 19th century.

Mounted in a silver pendant setting.

Measures 3.5 x 2cm.

Flora was the Roman goddess of flowers, fertility and spring who protected early blossoms from the Spring frost. Depicted as a beautiful maiden, garlanded with flowers in her hair, her name is derived from the Latin word 'floris' meaning flower. Flora was celebrated in the six day Floralia festival, which climaxed with gladiatorial games in ancient Rome. Her Greek counterpart was Chloris who was married to Zephyr, the West wind of Springtime.
